Block Mobile Spam, Stop Cell Phone Spam

Posted June 13, 2008

I hate, hate, hate spam.

I know, a shocker, right?

But worse than offers for V1A GAR A in my e-mailbox on a Monday morning?

Getting an SMS spam. You probably can guess why it’s worse than email spam: there’s no anti-spam software for SMS spam — or “SpaSMS” — yet, you have to open the SMS spam to delete it, and mobile spam costs you money because you get charged for the text message.

Thankfully, New York Times wrote up how to block mobile spam. And even more thankfully, I’ll summarize the article for you, because we both know New York Times uses too many big words sometimes. Snobs.

Here’s how you block mobile spam.

  • AT&T: Log into MyMessages.Wireless.ATT.com. Under Preferences, go ahead and block all text messages from the internet, or just from a specific website or address.
  • T-Mobile: Log into T-Mobile.com, and click Communication Tools. Go ahead and block all text messags sent by email, or create a filter to block SMS spam containing certain words (V1agar a maybe?)
  • Verizon Wireless: Log into VText.com. Under Text Messaging, select Preferences. Under Text Blocking, go ahead and block all text messages from the internet, or just from a specific website or address.
  • Sprint: Log into Spring.com. Under My Online Tools, select Communication Tools, then Text Messaging. Click to the Compose a Text Message page, select Text Messaging Options, then select Settings & Preferences.Type in any phone numbers, domains, or email addresses you want to block SMS spam from.

Cheers.
