IT Tech Support Tips

Posted December 1, 2008

IT tech support is not what it used to be. Once upon a time you would be talking to someone in the same country you, but now you are redirected to India where have to talk to someone with a thick Indian accent who is reading from a script over a bad connection. I’ve spent countless hours on the phone with tech support so I offer you these tips for the next time you have to deal with them.

Have your information ready: Make sure you have all your information like the product and serial numbers of what you are having problems with. If it’s a computer problem, make sure you are at the computer when call tech support.

Clear your timetable: Tech support isn’t like what you see on 24. Tech support calls can take a while and who knows who long you will be on hold, so don’t call tech support of you have to disarm a nuclear bomb in half an hour.

Calm Down and polite: There is no point in being angry on phone. It will get you no where. Trust me when I say that tech support is more willing to go out of their way when you are polite.

Read Serials Clearly. There’s no point in saying your serial is ADC145 over the phone as it’s easy to the person on the other end to mishear letters. Use the military method of conveying letters. For example, with ADC145 you would say Alpha, Delta, Charlie, 1, 4, 5. It may sound ridiculous saying it but it saves a lot of time.

Work you way up the chain: If the person you are talking to can’t help you, get them to transfer you to someone who can. You really have to stick to your guns with this and it can get frustrating but with persistence you can get transferred or get the phone number of someone who can help you. If you don’t do this, you may just end up running around in circles trying to resolve your problem.

That’s it, follow these tips and your next call to customer support should be a smooth one.
