Windows Refuses to Install Large Batches of Updates

Over the past few months, Windows XP Updates has been getting really annoying. Windows Update will download a large batch of updates but refuse to install them.
This only happens when I have done a fresh install of Windows XP and I go to update the computer after having installed the service packs. I just click install and Windows downloads the 98 or so updates and then tells me that they failed to install.
I’m not sure what is causing this but my way around it is to simply select 30 random critical updates and install those. After that you can download and install the rest of them without any problems.
